CUPRA ELECTRIC FAQs.

A plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) combines the range of a traditional internal combustion engine with the savings of a battery and electric motor.

On short trips, when the battery is fully charged, such as around the city, a Plug-in hybrid can operate like an EV, minimising fuel use. However, unlike an EV, it can revert to regular hybrid operation once its electric range is depleted. For maximum efficiency in different driving situations, such as on longer journeys or when accelerating rapidly, it uses the combined power of the electric motor and combustion engine. Charging your PHEV reduces fuel use, but it’s not essential that you charge your vehicle as it will recharge using regenerative braking.

Due to its size, a full battery charge cannot be achieved solely via the onboard generator and so requires plugging into an electrical outlet or charging station. The innovative interplay between both the electric and combustion motor allows for fuel-saving and lowers exhaust emissions, while providing the user with exceptional driving feel.

Drivers of a plug-in electric vehicle benefit from an almost-silent driving experience in all-electric mode, as well as having additional acceleration power (torque) thanks to the electric motor.

Many plug-in hybrid vehicle owners already manage most of their journeys in electric mode. This means they enjoy significant savings and reduced fuel usage compared to running a similar sized vehicle with only an internal combustion engine. Plug-in electric vehicle users can also take advantage of electric vehicle subsidies being rolled at a government level.

A plug-in hybrid can be recharged by plugging it into a charging point at home or work, or at a public charging station. Many people can undertake their normal commute to and from work using the emission-free, electric-powered motor. With a plug-in hybrid, you never have to give up complete autonomy – if the battery charge or capacity is not sufficient, the combustion engine will automatically activate as required.

Most users charge their vehicles in the evenings by connecting their vehicle to a power socket in their carport or garage. It’s also becoming increasingly easy to charge plug-in electric vehicles using public charging stations. Governments are pushing to make public charging stations widespread, thereby making it even easier to charge plug-in electric vehicles.

The maximum fuel savings of a plug-in hybrid is realised with a fully charged battery, so the possibility of charging at home or at the workplace should be taken into consideration. It’s recommended that you charge your plug-in hybrid vehicle as often as possible so you can take full advantage of the vehicle’s electric motor.

This category of vehicles also has economic advantages: through direct aid (not available in all states) and tax advantages thanks to their lower CO2 emissions.

The electric range of a plug-in hybrid vehicle depends on the size of its battery. In the case of CUPRA vehicles, the maximum electric range is between 50 and 60km, depending on the model.* The overall range is greatly increased when combined with the use of the combustion engine.

The range you experience will depend on which CUPRA model you drive, as well as, your driving style and the topography and road conditions you encounter. The main advantage of a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle is having both the fuel savings delivered by the electric battery and the range of a fuel tank.

Charging times may vary, depending on factors such as ambient temperature, the temperature of the battery, the charging equipment used, the condition of the battery and the condition of the vehicle. Specific charging times are detailed in the technical specifications for each available plug-in hybrid model.

Eight years or 160,000 kilometres, whichever comes first.

The CUPRA Leon and CUPRA Formentor are both available with plug-in hybrid technology.

According to Australia Customs Notice No. 2022/34, “from 1 July 2022, customs duty on electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles with a customs value less than the fuel efficient luxury car tax threshold will have a ‘Free’ rate of duty”

CUPRA PHEV and BEV model prices and offers are determined incorporating our best knowledge of the various local costs, taxes, duties and fees applicable.  These costs and duties change from time to time (one example is the import duty for some BEV and PHEV vehicles, another would be shipping and logistic costs).  Import duty is normally a tax paid by the importer and is a part of our costs in bringing the vehicle for sale to Australia.  We aim to get the best possible price in the Australian market while also guaranteeing availability of products that are in high demand globally.  There is no mechanism for a duty refund for customers on contracts already agreed and vehicles delivered.

In the case of CUPRA BEV and PHEV vehicles, no duty was collected or paid for BEV and PHEV vehicles as they were imported after July 1st2022.  CUPRA prices our vehicles in the most competitive way possible.

* The range of your plug-in electric hybrid vehicle will vary according to various factors, including the following: the route, weather conditions, vehicle load (occupants + luggage), battery age and condition, optional equipment (alloys, tyres, etc.), the use of peripheral energy consumption systems such as heating, air-conditioning and heated seats, as well as your driving style. The indicated range has been calculated in compliance with the World harmonized Light-duty vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) regulation, which sets out standard test conditions applicable to all car manufacturers. This ensures that the values calculated in accordance with this regulation are comparable for all vehicles.

*The values mentioned are the result of the type approval of the selected model, in accordance with Regulation CE 2018/858. The available power (kW) and acceleration of the model depends on the state of charge of the battery and its temperature.
